Filling the Football Void

by Geoffrey Stein on January 14 2008
Like many Americans, I was lost on Sunday night.

Without a football game to watch, I found myself channel surfing between nauseating post-game coverage of the afternoon contests, an NBA blowout featuring the Knicks which surprisingly didn`t have Isiah Thomas` crew on the losing end and a dating reality show featuring ladies that were, um, loose.

When my thong-shot, making out and edited bare chest quota for one episode was met -- about 10 minutes in -- I decided to scan the television universe for something that would kill a few less brain cells.

And that`s when I stumbled past Channel 29 and came upon another live sporting event: the Sony Open from Hawaii.

The first thing I noticed: Hawaii in January is a lot nicer than Michigan in January.

The second thing I noticed: My fantasy golf team for the week was in big trouble as Paul Goydos and Charles Howell III failed to make the cut, and Stuart Appleby had something better to do than play golf in Hawaii -- what that is, I don`t know.

The third thing I noticed: Holy crap, I was thinking about my fantasy golf team.

The final thing I noticed: Holy crap, I care about my fantasy golf team.

With the 2007-08 NCAA basketball season being as exciting as watching paint dry, I`m going to need something to fill the 10-hour gap in my Sunday schedule created by the end of the football season. My hope is that fantasy golf, coupled with lots of napping, will be enough to get the job done and keep me from doing anything productive or worthwhile.

This upcoming week, the PGA Tour moves back to the mainland with the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Bermuda Hills, Calif., also known as a place much warmer than Michigan.

Looking over the current field scheduled to participate, I noticed that Appleby isn`t playing again; this guy must live the life of a king.

I`ve also learned my lesson on Goydos. Unfortunately, cool name doesn`t equal on-course success; sorry Bart Bryant, I`m not starting you this week.

One golfer that does intrigue me, however, is Brian Gay, who made the cut and finished 40th overall this past weekend.

It`s been a good year for Gays in sports, as corner back Randall Gay has played well for the undefeated New England Patriots and forward Rudy Gay is enjoying a breakout season for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Another golfer to keep an eye on this weekend is John Daly, as the premiere of the aforementioned reality show may be enough to get `Big John` pumped up to play some quality golf.

My last pick for the Bob Hope is Mike Weir, because, well, he`s good ... I think.

That`s my reasoning, and I`m sticking to it.
