The Mock Market Report
by Geoffrey Stein on February 01 2008
Since the official opening of fantasy baseball mocks on Dec. 3, 2007, Mock Draft Central users have participated in a record-smashing number of practice drafts. This past week has been sizzling hot, with full mock drafts running at all times of the day. Every Friday, The Mock Market Report will highlight the biggest movers and shakers from the hundreds of completed drafts.
Coming off an injury-plagued season that limited him to 109 games, drafters are shying away from Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer. The 24-year-old backstop didn`t make the most of his time on the field either, putting up a modest .293-7-60 line in 406 at-bats. As a result, recent mocks have Mauer at sixth- or seventh-round levels; even falling as low as the eighth-round in a recent industry draft that required two starting catchers.
Believe it or not, deportation rumors don`t help fantasy value, so it`s really no surprise that Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada is falling down draft boards. The former American League MVP has lost 6.1 percent of his value since Jan. 18, the date of a Houston Chronicle report stating the FBI has launched a probe into whether the Astros` prized offseason addition lied under oath regarding past steroid use. The probe, along with Tejada being named in the Mitchell Report has many wondering where the one-time fantasy stud will be mentally and physically come the start of the season.
After signing on the dotted line this week, Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Pedro Feliz has started to develop a fantasy pulse. Despite a poor on-base percentage, many are looking at the newest Philly as a late-round power sleeper thanks to his move from pitcher-friendly AT&T Park to hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. With a launching pad for a home stadium, Feliz shouldn`t have any trouble topping 20 homers for the fifth straight season. He`s worth watching as his value has sprung up from previous non-existent levels.
Also gaining steam in deeper leagues: Twins outfielder/designated hitter Jason Kubel and pitcher Pat Neshek, Chicago White Sox outfielder Jerry Owens and Chicago Cubs infielder Ryan Theriot.
