Dynasty Notes

by Geoffrey Stein on February 07 2008
Initial dynasty drafts are like snowflakes: no two are alike. That includes the mock done here at Mock Draft Central last week. (Full results can be seen here.)

The 12-team, 30-round affair produced many intriguing picks that one doesn`t see in a standard redraft league. Here are five notable selections, in drafted order, for those preparing for their dynasty/keeper draft to take note of.

1- Ryan Howard at 16th overall
2008 will be Howard`s third full season at the big league level, so it was a bit surprising that he lasted until the fourth pick of the second-round in a dynasty draft, six picks after his redraft Average Draft Position. It may come as a shock to some that only four players selected ahead of the slugging first baseman -- Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, Jimmy Rollins and Johan Santana -- are older than Howard`s 28 years of age. While it`s unlikely his numbers will drop off any time soon, one has to assume it was the potential of the younger, in some cases more seasoned players, ahead of him that dropped the former MVP to 16th overall.

2- Tim Lincecum at 60th overall
Things looked quite redraft-like until the end of the fifth-round when Lincecum took a 55-pick (MDC ADP: 115) jump up the draft board. The selection of the second-year hurler set off a run on young pitchers with Matt Cain, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Fausto Carmona, Chien-Ming Wang, Yovanni Gallardo, Joba Chamberlain, James Shields and Francisco Liriano all going within the next 24 picks

3- Bobby Abreu at 99th overall
With the speed numbers going down and the weight going up, it`s really no surprise that drafters aren`t too excited about Abreu`s future production. Like Lincecum, there was a 55-pick swing in ADP, with the Yankees outfielder going nearly five rounds past his redraft levels.

4- John Smoltz at 114th overall
The beauty of dynasty/keeper leagues: there will be a champion in 2008. While Smoltz is no spring chicken, he certainly has something left in the tank evidenced by his 14 wins and 197 strikeouts last season. There is no reason to believe that the 40-year-old ace can`t continue to be a quality producer over the next two seasons and maybe contribute to a title or two.

5- Evan Longoria at 166th overall
It was almost shocking to see Ty Wigginton -- who is a decent pick in a keeper league due to his multi-position eligibility -- go the selection before Longoria, one of baseball`s top prospects. Jay Bruce, another top minor leaguer, went 12 picks later at 178th overall. This was a far cry from last year, when top prospects Delmon Young and Alex Gordon were both single-digit round selections in dynasty drafts.
