The Mock Market Report

by Geoffrey Stein on February 15 2008
Since the official opening of fantasy baseball mocks on Dec. 3, 2007, Mock Draft Central users have participated in a record-smashing number of practice drafts. This past week has been sizzling hot, with full mock drafts running at all times of the day. Every Friday, The Mock Market Report will highlight the biggest movers and shakers from hundreds of completed drafts.

Not surprisingly the trade that sent Johan Santana to the New York Mets has raised the value of the perennial Cy Young Award candidate. The National League`s newest ace has gone from a mid-to-late second rounder prior to the trade to a fringe first-round selection in the two weeks after its consummation. Overall, Santana has gained 23.1 percent on his Average Draft Position (ADP), moving up to the 14th player selected in 5x5 rotisserie leagues.

Another ace pitcher seeing an increase in value thanks to a trade is Erik Bedard. The newest Mariner has many excited about his move west, evidenced by the 11.3 percent bump in his ADP since the Seattle-Baltimore swap was finally completed one week ago. The rise up draft boards has moved Bedard ahead of Brandon Webb as the No. 3 pitcher selected in drafts, behind only Santana and Jake Peavy.

The value of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Kelvim Escobar is falling after a Feb. 7 Los Angeles Times report stating that the hard-throwing right-hander will start the 2008 season on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. The Angels` ace has lost 12.7 percent of his value -- dropping nearly 17 draft positions -- since the news broke.

Newton`s Law of Motion states: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. That is certainly the case for the values of Boston Red Sox pitchers Curt Schilling and Clay Buchholz. With Schilling likely to miss the majority of the upcoming season with a shoulder injury, drafters are running away from the veteran starter in droves. The 41-year-old righty has lost nearly 25 percent of his value over the last week. ... On the flip side, Buchholz -- now with a spot in the Red Sox rotation -- is soaring up draft boards. The talented young hurler has seen a 17.3 percent increase in his value, averaging out to a mid-13th-round selection in 12-team drafts.

Newton`s law also holds up for the value of Arizona Diamondbacks pitchers Brandon Lyon and Tony Pena. It came as a surprise when Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin stated that Lyon -- not Pena as originally thought by many drafters -- would enter the season as the closer for the defending National League West champions. As a result, Lyon`s value has skyrocketed 56.7 percent into the top 200 players drafted while Pena`s ADP has lost nearly 26.4 percent of its value.

This has been The Mock Market Report for Friday, Feb. 15, 2008. Be sure to check back next week for the latest movers and shakers in the fantasy baseball world.
