Expert Draft Produces Value
by Geoffrey Stein on February 26 2008
In my three years of watching or participating in industry drafts -- no matter the sport -- one thing has always stuck out to me: experts aren`t afraid to overdraft a player they really like.
That wasn`t the case for Mock Draft Central`s third expert draft, though, as there wasn`t a single pick that I considered to be a huge reach. However, there was more than a fair share of selections in which the drafter received an extremely good value -- something rarely seen in mocks featuring the best the industry has to offer.
Here, in alphabetical order, are the top value selections of expert draft No. 3.
1- Round 16, Pick 10 (Selection No. 190): OF Kosuke Fukudome, Cubs (ADP: 160)
The market on Fukudome has been unsteady at best, evidenced by his selection at 190th overall, 30 picks after ADP suggests he should go. This season`s hottest import has gone as early as the ninth-round in other expert drafts.
2- Round 9, Pick 5 (Selection No. 101): 1B Adrian Gonzalez, Padres (ADP: 78)
Gonzalez has been a player whose value has increased over the last month, so it was a bit surprising that he lasted until the 101st pick, 23 selections after his ADP. The slugging corner infielder is a late seventh-rounder in most 12-team mocks.
3- Round 6, Pick 11 (Selection No. 71): OF Corey Hart, Brewers (ADP: 61)
Although Hart left the board 10 picks after his ADP, it was surprisingly he lasted until the 71st pick, as the Brewers outfielder is a darling of many experts. The five-category outfielder has been moving up in mock drafts, going as high as 40th overall; his latest selection: 78th overall.
4- Round 9, Pick 1 (Selection No. 97): OF Brad Hawpe, Rockies (ADP: 77)
Hawpe`s selection at 97th overall equaled his latest selection in 203 drafts included in MDC`s ADP report. The slugging outfielder is an early seventh-round selection in the majority of mocks.
5- Round 22, Pick 10 (Selection No. 262): P Randy Johnson, Diamondbacks (ADP: 218)
Despite the recent positive news coming out of Diamondbacks` camp, the experts weren`t taking a chance on Johnson, as The Big Unit was selected 44 selections after his ADP.
6- Round 9, Pick 7 (Selection No. 104): 1B Paul Konerko, White Sox (ADP: 84)
Say what you want about the batting average and the feeling that comes along with drafting him, but Konerko has hit 30-plus home runs in four straight seasons; making him an excellent value 20 selections after his ADP.
7- Round 21, Pick 7 (Selection No. 247): P Troy Percival, Rays (ADP: 202)
Percival leaving the board 45 selections after his ADP is surprising when fellow bad team closers George Sherrill and Brian Wilson were both scooped up in the 17th-round. There were a handful of middle relievers selected ahead of the veteran door-slammer, as well.
