The Mock Market Report

by Geoffrey Stein on March 07 2008
Since the official opening of fantasy baseball mocks on Dec. 3, 2007, Mock Draft Central users have participated in a record-smashing number of practice drafts. This past week has been sizzling hot, with full mock drafts running at all times of the day. Every Friday, The Mock Market Report will highlight the biggest movers and shakers from hundreds of completed drafts.

The market is once again setting a new value on St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols after a March 6 report revealed the superstar is dealing with a "high grade" ligament tear in is elbow, as well as bone spurs, arthritis and inflammation. On Thursday, the 2005 National League Most Valuable Player went 12th, 15th and 16th overall in 15-team high stakes leagues and 29th overall in a 12-team expert league.

Despite recent optimism that he`ll recover from a strained elbow in time to start on Opening Day, the value of Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Scott Kazmir continues to fall. The hard-throwing lefty lost another 10.9 percent -- nearly nine selections -- off his Average Draft Position (ADP) this week. As a result, Kazmir has fallen behind fellow starters Carlos Zambrano and Aaron Harang.

Developing a fantasy pulse this week at the ultra-thin catching position is Gerald Laird of the Texas Rangers. The 28-year-old backstop ranks as the 31st catcher selected in 5x5 rotisserie leagues. ... Despite the rise of Laird, the value of the Rangers` other catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, has remained surprisingly steady. Even though the chances of him starting the season at Triple-A seem to be growing by the day, the prize of the deal that sent Mark Teixeira to Atlanta remains the seventh catcher selected with an ADP of 149.23.

Others picking up steam and making their first appearance on the ADP report: Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Andy LaRoche, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Adam Loewen, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher David Riske and Seattle Mariners outfielder/first baseman Brad Wilkerson.

Another surprising trend from this week was the lack of movement in the value of newly signed Cincinnati Reds outfielder Corey Patterson. As a free agent, the speedster was selected in 75 percent of drafts with an ADP of 262.62. Actually being on a team hasn`t helped much, as Patterson has only seen a 3.1 percent increase in value since joining the Reds.

This has been The Mock Market Report for Friday, March 7, 2008. Be sure to check back next week for the latest movers and shakers in the fantasy baseball world.
