The Mock Market Report
by Geoffrey Stein on May 30 2008
Since the official opening of Fantasy Football mocks on April 28, Mock Draft Central users have participated in a record-smashing number of practice drafts. The month was sizzling hot, with full mock drafts running at all times of the day. Today, The Mock Market Report will highlight the biggest movers and shakers from May.
Move over Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber, the news Fab Five is LaDainian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson, Brian Westbrook, Joseph Addai and Steven Jackson. The running back quintuplet has dominated the first five selections of early mocks, with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady being the only outsider to crack the top-five according to MDC`s Average Draft Position (ADP) data. The trend has held in expert drafts done at the site, as a combination of Tomlinson, Peterson, Westbrook, Addai and Jackson started out all 10 mocks that will be published later this summer.
While Brady sits at No. 6 overall in the public ADP, the experts preferred to keep the running back run going. The most popular selection at sixth-overall from those in the industry is Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber. Others receiving love at six in the magazine drafts: Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch and Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis.
The market is still setting itself on rookies, but the value of Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden has been fun to track. The No. 4 selection of the 2008 NFL Draft has been scooped up as early as the mid-second round of some mocks, but drafted as late as 72nd overall in others. With McFadden`s feast or fathom potential for the upcoming season, it wouldn`t be a surprise to see the wide range continue throughout the summer months: some like him a lot more than others. ... Other rookies with large draft ranges: Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart (47-83), Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall (59-91), Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith (55-152) and Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (68-not drafted).
Antonio Gates` days as the undisputed top fantasy tight end have come to an end thanks to Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys. In standard leagues, Gates sits at No. 41 overall with a draft range of 30 to 50. Witten isn`t far behind, however, at 44th overall and a range of 33 to 52. Things are even closer in point-per-reception leagues where Gates has an ADP of 43.49 and Witten has an ADP of 44.51. It hasn`t been unusual, in magazine drafts in particular, to see the Cowboys pass-catcher selected ahead of the former Kent State hoops star.
The earliest a team defense has been selected: 81st overall, an honor shared by the San Diego Chargers and Minnesota Vikings. ... The earliest a kicker has been selected: 121st overall, an honor belonging to Mason Crosby of the Green Bay Packers.
