On the verge of bad

by Geoffrey Stein on August 26 2008
Ever get the feeling something bad is about to happen?

For instance: On my way into work this morning, there were some unnatural noises coming from the front passenger side of the Geoffmobile. Grand Rapids, Mich. mechanics be on alert, there`s a -- likely expensive -- job coming your way.

And while my car is white, it could just as well be orange and black, the colors of the Cincinnati Bengals.

To say this preseason has been a disaster for the boys from the Queen City is an understatement. And all signs point to it continuing into the regular season.

Monday`s news that wide receiver Chad Johnson has a partially torn labrum is the latest hit to a Cincinnati team that is already dealing with injuries to quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

While Palmer`s broken nose won`t cost him any regular season time and many are speculating that Houshmandzadeh`s hamstring "issues" are due to a lack of contract extension, the karma surrounding the Bengals right now certainly isn`t good -- bad things are happening.

Karma can only be blamed for so much, though. The Bengals are also not good.

Preseason numbers don`t mean much, and Palmer shouldn`t be judged by his 22-of-38 passing for 188 yards, but it?s hard to ignore how bad the Cincinnati offensive line has looked.

Obviously, having wide receivers Antonio Chatman, Glenn Holt and Jerome Simpson on the field with the first team didn`t help matters, but it`s hard to overlook Palmer being sacked three times in two quarters on Saturday.

Having Johnson and Houshmandzadeh on the field won`t require Palmer to hold the ball as long, but one has to question whether they`ll be there for 16 games.

Johnson`s shoulder injury will be an issue until it`s corrected surgically. And although he plans on playing through it, "Ocho Cinco" is one big hit or awkward fall away from his next game being in 2009.

Entering the final year of his contract, it`s fair to wonder if Houshmandzadeh will protect himself for his impending big payday. Why would he play through any sort of pain for a non-contender that isn`t willing to extend his contract?

Are the Bengals finished as a force in the Fantasy Football world? Not yet.

Am I planning on getting home by driving my car? Yes.

Unfortunately, it`s not going to take much for either of those situations to change.
