Last night, I participated in a 12-team, non-PPR expert league for the upcoming Fantasy Football season
Starting rosters included one QB, TE, K and team defense, two RBs and three WRs. Five bench players were also selected.
Here is the team I drafted out of the No. 1 spot:
Round 1, Pick 1: RB LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers -- The Fantasy Football gods were shining down on me, as I had the chance to draft Tomlinson for the second time this preseason.
Round 2, Pick 12: RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars -- By my count, I`m in more than 10 leagues for the 2008 season; I wanted to mix things up a bit and select Jones-Drew, who I`ve yet to draft this preseason. ... He wasn`t long for my roster, though.
Round 3, Pick 1: WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Bengals -- I have a bad feeling about the Bengals offense this year, but with both starting RB positions filled and QBs Tony Romo of the Cowboys and Drew Brees of the Saints off the board, Houshmandzadeh was the pick to be my No. 1 WR.
Round 4, Pick 12: WR Jerricho Cotchery, Jets -- The more I see of Cotchery, the more I like him. While I prefer him in PPR leagues, the Jets addition of QB Brett Favre will raise Cotchery`s TD numbers.
Round 5, Pick 1: TE Kellen Winslow, Browns -- Like Cotchery, I prefer Winslow in PPR leagues. Like Cotchery, I think Winslow is due to top last year`s touchdown total (five).
Round 6, Pick 12: RB Willie Parker, Steelers -- Parker is being severely undervalued this year. Rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall is having troubles hanging onto the football and one-year ago at this time, Parker was a 16-TD RB. I`m thrilled to land him at 72nd overall.
Round 7, Pick 1: RB Ricky Williams, Dolphins -- This pick was about three things: upside, upside and upside.
After adding Parker and Williams with back-to-back selections, I felt comfortable enough to offer up my No. 2 RB, Jones-Drew, in a trade. I quickly swung a deal to acquire Patriots WR Wes Welker, the 32nd overall selection, straight up for Jones-Drew.
Round 8, Pick 12: QB Matt Schaub, Texans -- I really wanted Jets QB Brett Favre in this spot, but he left the board four picks ahead of me. I`m not disappointed with Schaub, though I`d rather have someone a little more proven.
Round 9, Pick 1: QB Kurt Warner, Cardinals -- A two-headed QB monster of Schaub and Warner has a good deal of upside. It also has a good deal of injury report potential.
Round 10, Pick 12: WR Robert Meachem, Saints -- I like Meachem a lot more in non-PPR leagues. The catches won`t be there, but I fully expect him to come close to five TDs.
Round 11, Pick 1: RB Chris Perry, Bengals -- Adding Perry only confirmed that I won`t be missing Jones-Drew.
At this point, my 28-year-old home computer flamed out and the non-Mock Draft Central software was kind enough to select Texans WR Kevin Walter, Titans WR Justin Gage and Rams TE Randy McMichael. I`ll have to add a K and defense at some point -- I`m not too worried about it, though.
Overall, I like this team. Getting Tomlinson obviously helped that.
A WR corps of Housmandzadeh, Cotchery and Welker should be more than alright, even without a PPR.
The key, in my opinion, comes down to what I get out of the QB position.
Schaub and Warner do have the potential to be top-10 fantasy QBs, but they`re far from a sure-thing.
